Can Cancer Come Back After Treatment? Understanding Recurrence
Finishing cancer treatment can bring relief, but many survivors still wonder whether the disease can return. Cancer recurrence means that the original cancer comes back after a period when it could not be detected. It may return near the original tumor or appear in another part of the body. A recurrence is different from developing a new or second cancer. Cancer can return because a small number of cancer cells may remain after treatment. These cells can be too small to appear on scans or other tests. Over time they may grow and become detectable. This does not automatically mean that the earlier treatment was unsuccessful or incorrect. Recurrence can happen months or even years after treatment. The risk depends on factors such as the cancer type, stage, tumor characteristics, treatment received and response to treatment.
